When the City of Toronto announces plans to build supportive housing on a parking lot in East Westonville Village, local homeowners lose their minds. “Housing for the homeless?” they scream. “Not in our neighbourhood!” Yet the very people homeowners fear are already among them and their lives are woven together in surprising ways. A reporter comes running. The scent of money attracts dark interests. The mayor dithers. A porch pirate and a wellness influencer go into business. The parking lot finds fame and dares to dream of being warm in winter. And what happens to Nimrod, the littlest Chihuahua?

Spangle Theatre assembles a group of talented theatre artists from all over Toronto, to bring you Stealing Home, a play about a city that has our hearts, yet too often drives us to despair.

Land acknowledgement
Our play tells the story of a neighbourhood in turmoil from the point of view of Mac, the parking lot. Mac represents the land – the ground that today we stand on, build houses on, and park on. Before settlers, this land has been a site of human activity for thousands of years. We recognize with gratitude the enduring presence of indigenous people on this land and we acknowledge all of them, named and unnamed, known and unknown, as the original keepers of this land.

Stealing Home is a comedy, but it does talk about homelessness and gives details about the number of people who die each year while homeless in Toronto. There is also a scene in which a package is mistakenly identified as a sex toy.
Sensory description
Stealing Home has eight characters played by six actors. There are a lot of short scenes and a lot of dialogue between them. Sometimes the actors talk to the audience. There is a lot of movement on and off the stage. Most of the play takes place outdoors on a neighbourhood parking lot. Sometimes the actors speak in a chorus to tell more of the story. There will be some sound and short pieces of music.
