The Chess Player
Company
Theatre Omnibus
Writer
Richard McElvain
Runtime
80 minutes

Imprisoned by Nazis. Solitary confinement. A stolen book of chess games becomes a prisoner’s only grasp on sanity. Until the games lose their initial mystique. Fighting madness by choosing schizophrenia, he survives by dividing himself into two feuding chess masters. Richard McElvain reimagines Stefan Zweig’s classic.

This one-person-show is highly theatrical. McElvain plays a dozen different characters, often simultaneous in the same scene. The production is underscored with a powerful soundscape. THE CHESS PLAYER has won awards and enthralled audiences from London to Istanbul leaving audiences on their feet and cheering.
